O (Othello)

R

7:00 & 9:00 plus 2:00 & 4:00 Sat/Sun

AMORES PERROS-- This Oscar-nominated film comes from Mexican director Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu. "It is the work," Roger Ebert writes, "of a born filmmaker," and it tells three interlinked stories that span the social classes in Mexico City, from rich TV people to the working class to the homeless. The title is roughly translated as "Love's a Bitch," and dogs figure prominently in all these those stories along with a strong nod to Quentin Tarantino-- especially his now-classic Pulp Fiction. (lion's gate films) Rated R for violence/gore, language and sexuality. In Spanish with English subtitles. It plays in our upstairs cinema-- 2hrs, 33min.

O (Othello)-- This version of Shakespeare's Othello is set in a Southern prep school. Here, the Othello role is played by newcomer Mekhi Phifer. Also starring Josh Hartnett, Julia Stiles, and Martin Sheen. Roger Ebert calls this "a good film for most of the way, and then a powerful film at the end, when, in the traditional Shakespearean manner, all of the plot threads come together," and-- well-- you know what happens. Curiously, in the knee-jerk reactions coming out of Washington and L.A. after the Columbine massacre, this film was put on the shelf for two years. Ebert scoffs: "To suggest that ''O'' was part of the solution and not part of the problem would have required a sophistication that our public officials either lack, or are afraid to reveal, for fear of offending the bottom-feeders among their constituents. (lion's gate films) Rated R for violence, a scene of strong sexuality, language, and drug use. Playing in our downstairs cinema-- 1hr, 35 minutes.

Legally Blonde

PG-13

7:15 & 9:15 plus 2:15 & 4:15 Sat/Sun

ORIGINAL SIN-- This steamy thriller starts off about 100 years ago when a wealthy Cuban coffee planter, played by Antonio Banderas, decides he needs a mail-order bride. Although she sends along an ugly photo-- she didn't want him to buy her on looks alone, she turns out to look like... Angelina Jolie. "There are surprises on top of surprises," writes Roger Ebert, who gives this film three stars. "The movie is not intended to be subtle," continues Ebert. "It is sweaty, candle-lit melodrama, joyously trashy, and its photography wallows in sumptuous decadence." (mgm) Rated R for lots of nudity, strong sexual content, and some violence. Playing in our upstairs theater-- 1hr, 42 min.

LEGALLY BLONDE-- When we first meet Reese Witherspoon's character, blond glamour-gal Elle Woods, she's nearing the end of her senior year in college, and she's eagerly awaiting the ring and marriage to dull boyfriend Warner, played by Matthew Davis. Instead, he skips off to law school to plan for a career in politics with a new woman. So Elle decides to follow. "Witherspoon," writes Salon, "plays Elle with a squinty determination that's both devilishly funny and endearing." (mgm) Rated PG-13 for language and sexual references. Playing in our downstairs cinema-- 1hr, 36min.

Made

R

7:00 & 9:00 plus 2:00 & 4:00 Sat/Sun

REQUIEM FOR A DREAM-- A lonely, TV-obsessed widow believes she's been chosen for a TV game show. Trying to lose weight to fit her favorite red dress, she becomes hooked on diet pills-- while her son and his friends are using heroin and cocaine. As he did in his directoral debut, "Pi," director Darren Aronofsky uses unusual techniques including split-screen shots, body cameras, and odd film speed to dramatize four lives spiralling out of control. Audiences, perhaps terrified that this film has no rating, did not give it appropriate attention at the first-run theaters. Critics, however, lavished praise. The L.A. Times called it a "work of art," Roger Ebert gushed over the "virtuoso closing sequence," and Ellen Burstyn was nominated for an Oscar as Best Actress. Also starring Jared Leto, Jennifer Connelly, and Marlon Wayans. (Artisan) Contains graphic depictions of the extremes of drug addiction, some sex, language, adult themes and situations. Not for the squeamish. Playing in our upstairs cinema-- 1hr, 42 min.

MADE-- Do the characters played by Jon Favreau and Vince Vaughn seem familar? If you saw the 1996 hit "Swingers," they should. Here, Favreau plays a mediocre boxer who gets a shot at big money when his Mob mentor (played by Peter Falk of "Columbo" fame) sends him from L.A. to New York on the next thing to a moron's errand. Guess who tags along? Vaughn, still playing the blowhard, whose idea of humor is bestowing and then retracting a well-earned tip from a bell-hop. Roger Ebert says this film is "peculiarly entertaining." (Artisan) Rated R for pervasive language, some drug use and sexuality. Playing in our downstairs cinema-- 1hr, 35 min.

MEMENTO--A man, suffering from short-term memory loss, uses notes and tattoos to hunt down his wife's killer. When someone knows his name, he checks Polaroids he has taken to see if he knows them. Does he like this person? Does he trust this person? He doesn't know unless he's scribbled a note. From this simple premise comes one of the most interesting and inventive films in recent, uh, memory. (ifc films) Rated R for violence, language and some drug content. Playing in our downstairs cinema-- 1hr, 43 min.

HEARTS IN ATLANTIS--"Rarely does a movie make you feel so warm and so uneasy at the same time," writes Roger Ebert on the film made last fall in the Sears Hill neighborhood in Staunton. Starring Anthony Hopkins as the mysterious stranger who arrives unexpectedly into the life of an adolescent boy. "Like a lot of Stephen King's recent work," Ebert points out, "it is not a horror story so much as an everyday story with horror lurking in the margins." Plenty of amazing Staunton scenery. (warner brothers) Rated PG-13 for violence and thematic scenes. Playing in our downstairs cinema-- 1hr, 41 minutes.

CAPTAIN CORELLI'S MANDOLIN-- From the director of "Shakespeare in Love," this film, based on a well-received novel by Louis de Bernieres, stars Penelope Cruz, John Hurt, and the man the San Francisco Chronicle calls the most talented actor of his generation: Nicholas Cage. Here he plays the title role as a music-loving Italian army officer who's part of the occupation force on the Greek island of Cephallonia during World War II. The Chronicle writes, "Cage refrains from pumping up the volume, and actually underplays the character's soulful gusto, making Corelli all the more affecting as a man of peace and, eventually, all the more compelling as a man of war." Jurassic Park III

ONE NIGHT AT MCCOOL'S-- Liv Tyler stars as a sultry grifter named Jewel who blows into a small town and quickly becomes the object of desire for three men (Matt Dillon, Paul Reiser, and John Goodman). The film is told from the varying perspective of the three dupes-- each of whom will lie, steal, and murder to have her. The film follows Jewel as she effortlessly wraps each of them around her finger en route to a dizzy, violent conclusion. Tightly-scripted "McCool's" is a sharp farce with more than its share of belly laughs. (usa films) Rated R for violence, sexuality, and language. Playing in our upstairs cinema-- 1hr, 43 min.

JURASSIC PARK 3--There's a surprisingly delicate touch at work in "Jurassic Park III," and the movie is marbled through with strands of acerbic wit. You might think that a filmmaker who goes through that much trouble in a "Jurassic" picture is like casting pearls before swine. What chance do pearls have under the feet of prehistoric giants? Miraculously, they survive the trampling intact, and they're what you remember long after the last mighty footstep resonates. BREAD AND ROSES-- According to Roger Ebert, the highlight of this film is a searing speech by protagonist Rosa, "delivered with such force and shaming truth that it could not have been denied the Oscar--if the Academy voters in their well-cleaned buildings ever saw movies like this." Ebert gives this drama about a janitorial strike in Los Angeles three and half stars. (lion's gate films) Rated R for strong language and brief nudity. BRIDGET JONES'S DIARY-- Renée Zellweger slips into a British accent as the 30-ish, single heroine of Helen Fielding's bestselling book. She's drawn to an archetypal Mr. Wrong, played by an arrogant Hugh Grant as the womanizing boss of the publishing company where she works. Meanwhile, Bridget resists the quieter charms of Mr. Right, a crusading civil rights lawyer played by Colin Firth. Playing in our upstairs cinema-- 1hr, 34min.

PEARL HARBOR-- "The best piece of popular entertainment to come along in years," writes Washington Post reviewer Stephen Hunter. BEFORE NIGHT FALLS&emdash; Javier Bardem plays Reinaldo Arenas, a gay poet fighting Fidel Castro's oppression. Directing his second film, following 1996's "Basquiat," the artist Julian Schnabel, who co-wrote the script based on Arenas' memoir, paints a vivid screen portrait of creative and carnal awakening including the liberating energy of pre-Castro Cuba. Bardem is the film's glory, writes Rolling Stone's Peter Travers, calling this a "breakthrough performance that ranks with the year's best." Also starring Johnny Depp and Sean Penn (fine line) 133 minutes. Rated R for strong sexual content, some language and brief violence).

Roger Ebert gives it 3.5 stars and writes: "Moulin Rouge the movie is more like the Moulin Rouge of my adolescent fantasies than the real Moulin Rouge ever could be. It isn't about tired, decadent people, but about glorious romantics, who believe in the glitz and the tinsel--who see the nightclub not as a shabby tourist trap but as a stage for their dreams. Even its villain is a love-struck duke who gnashes his way into the fantasy, content to play a starring role however venal." HEARTBREAKERS-- Just a comedy, but what a cast: Sigourney Weaver, Jennifer Love Hewitt, Ray Liotta, Anne Bancroft, Nora Dunn, Carrie Fisher and Gene Hackman. MGM. The New York Times writes: "At a time when most comedies go for your wallet with a kick in the groin and a blackjack to the back of the head, this one, though it has some blunt instruments in its bag of tricks, has the class and professionalism to perpetrate an honest and sophisticated con." Or as Roger Ebert puts it: "It does what a comedy must: It makes us laugh." Rated PG-13 for sex-related content including dialogue. (mgm) Playing in our upstairs cinema-- 2 hrs, 3 min.

FREDDY GOT FINGERED-- If you're already a Tom Green fan, you're going to see this. If you're wondering what all the fuss is, be prepared. As someone on Rollingstone.com wrote, Green "set out to make the worst movie of all time-- and succeeded. He, like Andy Kaufmann, has self-destructive comic tendencies that will make him the most hated comic of his time." On the other hand, so many people found Kaufmann a genius that the biopic of his life, "Man on the Moon," became one of the more critically acclaimed films of 1999. Besides Green, Freddy stars Rip Torn and Julie Hagerty. (twentieth century fox) Rated R for crude sexual and bizarre humor and strong language. Playing in our upstairs cinema-- 1hr, 33min.

ENEMY AT THE GATES-- During the World War II battle of Stalingrad, two snipers-- a Russian played by Jude Law, and a German played by Ed Harris-- are locked in a battle of wills and marksmenship, while the Russian is boosted to the status of hero by a political official played by Joseph Fiennes. Roger Ebert says the opening battle sequence "deserves comparison with 'Saving Private Ryan.'" (paramount) Rated R for strong, graphic war violence and some sexuality. Someone Like You

PG-13

7:00 & 9:00 plus 2:00 & 4:00 Sat/Sun

BLOW-- This is a true story. Johnny Depp plays an East Coast kid who went to California in the late 1960s in search of sun and fun. Thanks to a series of convenient coincidences and his own moral blindness, he became the primary U.S. connection for a Colombian cocaine cartel. Penelope Cruz co-stars as Jung's drug-addled Colombian wife; Franka Potente, the German star of "Run Lola Run," is the stewardess who innocently introduces Jung to the drug business. This film mixes the wild fantasy of wealth and excitement with a moral: "crime does not pay." Also starring Paul Reubens, Ray Liotta and Rachel Griffiths. (newline) R for pervasive drug content and language, some violence and sexuality. Playing in our upstairs cinema-- 1hr, 59min.

SOMEONE LIKE YOU&emdash; A dull title for an appealingly quirky love story adapted from Laura Zigman's novel "Animal Husbandry." The good news, according to "Rolling Stone," is that except for slapping a happy face on the novel's rueful ending, the film is a "distinct pleasure." Hugh Jackman is funny and touching in a role he rescues from macho caricature. His scenes with the plucky single girl played by Ashley Judd have a poignancy that soars above the chick-flick herd into the realm of sweet magic. Also starring Ellen Barkin, Oscar winner Marisa Tomei, and Greg Kinnear in the sleaze mode he played so well in "Nurse Betty." (twentieth century fox) Rated PG-13 for sexual content including dialogue, and for some language. Playing in our downstairs cinema-- 1hr, 40min.

Binoche's Unbearable Lightness of Being co-star Lena Olin appears here as well. Also starring Johnny Depp , Judi Dench, Alfred Molina, and Carrie-Ann Moss. Many critics have fallen in love with this film's sensuousness. From the director of The Cider House Rules. (miramax) PG-13 for for a scene of sensuality and some violence. Playing in our upstairs cinema. 2hrs, 1min.

BOUNCE-- Ben Affleck and Gwyneth Paltrow star in this thoughtful love story that begins with an airplane crash and a drunken plane ticket trade. It's a little far-fetched, but the players are really likeable. Even Roger Ebert has this to say: "I wanted them to become lovers, which means they sold me on themselves." Written and directed by Don Roos. (miramax) Rated PG-13 for some language and sensuality. Playing in our downstairs cinema. 1hr, 42min

THIRTEEN DAYS-- The title comes from the tensest moments of 1962: the cuban missle crisis. It's the heart of the Cold War, and the Soviets have just planted nuclear missles in Cuba, and Kennedy says they must go. A taut, suspenseful film starring Kevin Costner and directed by Roger Donaldson, who also directed Costner in another edge-of-the-seat drama, 1987's classic nail-biter, No Way Out. (newlinefilms) Rated PG-13 for brief strong language. Playing in our downstairs cinema-- 2hrs, 15min.

THE HOUSE OF MIRTH--  A film about raging against the machine-- that gave women few options in life. Gillian Anderson plays the headstrong woman who slips into a trap that sends her life-- into an elgant but precipitous downward spiral. Scoring three and a half stars from Roger Ebert, this film is based on the Edith Wharton novel of the same title. Also starring Eric Stoltz, Dan Aykroyd, and Laura Linney. (sonyclassics) Rated PG for thematic material. Playing in our upstairs cinema-- 2hrs, 20min.

STATE AND MAIN-- This, writes Roger Ebert, is a "playful" movie about a film company that arrives in small Vermont town after having to beat a quick retreat out of New Hampshire, allegedly because a town lacked an old mill that could be used as a location, but more directly because Bob Barrenger (played by Alec Baldwin), the movie's star, has a weakness for junior high school girls. Written and directed by the great David Mamet. Also starring Sarah Jessica Parker and Charles Durning. (fine line features) Rated R for language and brief sexual images. Playing in our downstairs cinema-- 1hr, 46min.

OH BROTHER, WHERE ART THOU? The film is a Homeric journey through Mississippi during the Depression by the Cohen Brothers, the directors of such classics as Blood Simple, Raising Arizona, and Fargo. Bluegrass music is at the heart of the film, and there are images of chain gangs, sharecropper cottages, cotton fields, populist politicians, river baptisms, hobos on freight trains, patent medicines, 25-watt radio stations and Klan rallies&emdash; the last of which looks like a Busby Berkley musical number both chilling and ridiculous. Starring George Clooney, John Turturro, Charles Durning, John Goodman, and Holly Hunter. (touchstone/universal) Rated PG-13 for some violence and language. Playing in our upstairs cinema&emdash; 1hr, 43min.

A HARD DAY'S NIGHT&emdash; "It was so joyous and original that even the early reviews acknowledged it as something special. After more than three decades, it has not aged and is not dated; it stands outside its time, its genre and even rock. It is one of the great life-affirming landmarks of the movies." That was all a direct quotation from Roger Ebert musical starring John, Paul, George, and Ringo. (miramax) Rated G. Playing in our downstairs cinema&emdash; 1hr, 32min.

YOU CAN COUNT ON ME&emdash; "This is one of the best movies of the year," declares Roger Ebert in his four-starred review. "The characters in "You Can Count on Me" have been freed from the formulas of fiction and set loose to live lives where they screw up, learn from their mistakes and bumble hopefully into the future." Set in a town called&emdash; curiously enough&emdash; Scottsville. Starring Laura Linney, Rory Culkin, and Matthew Broderick. (paramountclassics) 109 min. THE GIFT&emdash; In the bucolic town of Brixton, widow Annie Wilson (played by Cate Blanchett) earns extra cash by reading people's fortunes. Annie possesses clairvoyant powers, and the skeptical locals shun her. But the police turn to Annie on a missing-persons case. Director Sam Raimi uses precious few special effects to convey fear. The mere suggestion of the presence of evil (mostly embodied by Keanu Reeves as the abusive Donnie) is enough to send shivers down your spine. Also starring Hilary Swank (paramount classics) Rated R for violence, nudity, sexuality. Playing in our downstairs cinema&emdash; 1hr, 51min.

THE CONTENDER &emdash; Filmed in Richmond, based on Bill Clinton's sex scandal, The Contender, is a thriller about the first woman nominated to be vice president, and a question about her steamy past. Roger Ebert, who gave it four stars, writes: "Most movies are like puppies that want everyone to pet them. The Contender takes sides and is bold about it."
