Charlottesville's own Paul Curreri celebrates the release of his 6th album, California.

Released overseas some months back via the UK label, Tin Angel Records, California has been generating rave reviews: Uncut magazine gave it four stars; MOJO described the album as “13 intimate, luminously produced tracks, and his multi-instrumental skills consistently impress.” Said The Independent: “He is something of a quiet genius, having a gift for skewed, elliptical or downright dutch arrangements of the familiar tropes of American music... He is so quietly, persistently musical that he might be the JJ Cale or Jesse Winchester of our time.”

California is Paul’s first album in nearly three years. A 2008 throat injury forced him off the road for over 15 months. It was a pretty sobering time. “Oh man, here and there, it whirl-winded me. I wasn’t sure if I was a musician or a soccer mom or a bed bug,” he admits. “But in a way… it almost felt like a blessing. I realized certain junk isn’t permanently within me, that there’s peace to be found relatively close by, that some degree of – I don’t know – grace is attainable, even if it kinda comes and goes.” 6,000 miles of motorcycling later, here is California.

At 13 tracks, California covers a lot of sonic ground. From the opening track’s pounding piano drive, to the near uncomfortable honesty and simplicity of “I Can Never Return,” Curreri fastballs a lot of sticky ideas at the wall. There’s a fully improvised, fully belted, and fully unintelligible blues bash. Another number, “Off the Street, Onto The Road,” opens with a phone conversation between Scott Joplin and Joseph Lamb. On the only track to feature a guest, wife Devon Sproule shows up for a gorgeous duet take on Michael Hurley’s “Wildegeeses.” Curreri even throat-sings at the tail of “I Can Hear The Future Calling.” It’s a damn blast.

With a deeply rooted guitar style – seemingly flecked by Rev. Gary Davis, Bill Frisell, Ali Farka Touré, and Marc Ribot – Paul was Invited to travel to Kenya last September to participate in a collaboration between Western and African musicians.

Tonight’s concert features that guitar with a pretty stellar band in tow – Jonathan Mills on bass, and Sons Of Bill’s Sam Wilson on guitar and Todd Wellons on drums. Their last concert back in January left folks really stoked. Wouldn’t surprise us to see a few other guests as well – perhaps one could be Ms. Sproule (nudge nudge)?

With special guest opener, Nathan Moore.
